Equity markets returned to their September lows again this week pushing the Dow back below 18,000. This underscores our warnings that the construction of most portfolios is likely to underperform the targets set in most financial plans.
The Wall Street Journal declared the first oil and gas IPO in 2 years a “winner.” Yet the valuations for the company, which we will cover this week, appear dangerous for the buyers. The buyers, by definition, include “low cost” passive index funds as well as index based active mutual funds.
Combine this with the possibility that US equity markets are “ranged bound,” defined by the Dow’s recent peak near 18,600 and lows set 3 times near 15,500, and investors could be better off with a better solution than equity dependency or settling for historically low yields in the global investment grade bond areas.
This week’s NetWorth Radio program explores common sense based solutions.
